The significance of numbers has a deep rooted history in many of the world's religions. The Babylonians reserved certain numbers for certain gods - 15 represented Ishtar and 20 Shamash. In many religions, 1 represents the supreme god - including the Jewish, Christian, and Moslem. Moses said, "The Lord our God is One". The Quran instructs "Say God is One." The Quran contains a mathematical miracle using 19 throughout. The Tarot too derives much of its meaning from numerology as the 78 cards of the Tarot are equal to the sum of first 12 numbers (1+2+3+4+5+6+7+8+9+10+11+12=78). 12 is repeatedly used to represent a complete cycle of events and experiences -- for instance the 12 months of the year, astrology's 12 signs, the 12 disciples of Christ . Much of our knowledge about numerology comes from Plato a student of Pythagorus (582 B.C.). If you have studied mathematics you are probably aware of the Pythagorean theorem which states that the square of the hypotenuse of a right triangle is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides. Pythagorous taught that numbers have significance apart from figures. Numbers represent qualities and carry spiritual meaning, while figures represent quantities and hold earthy-material meaning. Even today there are superstitions surrounding numbers -- for instance the number 13 and its association in the western world with unlucky events. Hotels don't number the 13th floor. Don't confuse this with numerology. In the traditional study of numerology, 13 represents someone who is reborn into a higher level of consciousness and has reached a state of transmutation. This is reflected in the Christian world where there were twelve disciples where Jesus was the thirteenth. There are several other examples in the Christian world of the importance of numerology - 3 is often associated with components of existence / creation - the holy trinity, the Three Magi (wise men) just to name a few. Regardless of its origins, the spiritual significance of numbers (not figures which represent quantities) cannot be deigned. I encourage you to study esoteric numerology should you feel the calling. I have found its study fascinating and very rewarding. |
